Carer Support and Development Case Worker
Charlestown NSW, Australia

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Carer Support and Development Specialist to support and strengthen foster and kinship carers.

 

This is a unique, practice-focused role combining:

  • Carer support
  • Training & development
  • Family Group Conferencing facilitation
  • Reflective practice & group supervision

Position Objective

 

The position is responsible for providing specialist support, assessment and development of foster and kinship carers, ensuring high-quality, trauma-informed care for children and young people.

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities

 

Carer Reviews & Development

  • Undertake annual carer reviews in line with organisational requirements.
  • Identify strengths, development needs, and areas of risk or support
  • Develop and monitor individual carer development plans
  • Maintain accurate and compliant documentation

 

Carer Support

  • Provide ongoing emotional, practical and professional support to carers 
  • Build strong relationships to support carer wellbeing and placement stability
  • Assist carers to respond to complex behaviours and trauma-related needs
  • Connect carers to services, peer networks, and specialist supports
  • Advocate for carers within the care system

 

Family Group Conferencing (FGC)

  • Facilitate or coordinate Family Group Conferencing processes
  • Prepare families and stakeholders to actively participate
  • Create a safe, inclusive and strengths-based environment
  • Support families to develop child-focused, sustainable plans
  • Collaborate with caseworkers and relevant stakeholders

 

Reflective Practice & Group Supervision

  • Facilitate group supervision and reflective practice sessions
  • Promote a culture of learning, critical reflection, and continuous improvement
  • Support participants to explore practice, decision-making, and challenges

 

Training & Capability Development

  • Assist to design and deliver training programs for carers
  • Align training with trauma-informed principles and organisational frameworks
  • Assess learning needs and evaluate training outcomes
  • Support carers to engage in ongoing learning and skill development
  • Willingness to undertake Step by Step Training to become and authorised assessor where appropriate

 

Practice Framework Integration

  • Embed the Allambi Needs-Based Restorative Framework in all interactions
  • Apply a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach
  • Support carers to understand child development, trauma impacts, and healing
  • Promote consistency across practice and service delivery

 

*Where necessary specific training will be provided

 

 

Essential Criteria

 

  • Relevant qualification in Community Services, Social Work, Psychology, or related field
  • Experience in Out-of-home care / foster care, Family or child protection services, Training, facilitation or practice leadership roles
  • Interpersonal & Communication Skills
  • Ability to quickly build rapport and connect with a wide range of people with confidence
  • Strong communication and active listening skills
  • Ability to facilitate discussions, groups, and training effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to elicit information sensitively and effectively
  • Ability to identify problems, risks, and areas requiring support
  • Strong critical thinking and professional judgement
  • Ability to assess needs and develop practical support strategies
  • Experience facilitating Family Group Conferencing or similar processes or willingness to complete appropriate training
  • Skills in delivering training, group supervision, and reflective practice or willingness to complete appropriate training
  • Ability to manage group dynamics and create psychologically safe environments
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and strengths-based practice
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
  • Experience supporting carers to navigate service systems and access resources
  • Knowledge of out-of-home care, child protection, and family systems

  • Full Time Employment
  • 4 weeks Annual leave per year

Must have these documents if successful

  • Current Working with Children Check (for paid employment)
  • Current NDIS Worker Check (can be obtained via https://www.service.vic.gov.au/services/national-disability-insurance-scheme)
  • Current First Aid Certificate (Provide First Aid; Course Code HLTAID003)
  • National Police Check (this must be obtained via https://www.employmentscreeninggroup.com/au/allambi/)
  • International Police Check for applicants who have lived continuously for 12 months or more in another country within the last 10 years.
  • A current driver’s licence
  • Certificate of Completion: NDIS Worker Orientation Module (can be accessed via: https://training.ndiscommission.gov.au/)
  • Willingness to participate in pre-employment medical checks
  • Two professional references 
  • Willingness to participate in a Disqualified Carer’s Check
