About the Role The teaching role at Allambi is a unique position that offers flexible and responsive educational opportunities for vulnerable young people in out-of-home care. This is not a traditional classroom teaching position. Teachers in this role deliver learning in small groups, through team-teaching arrangements, and via targeted one-on-one sessions tailored to individual student needs. This role is ideal for educators who are passionate about working with young people who present with complex backgrounds and who can adapt to a dynamic, non-traditional learning environment to ensure each student's needs are met. About Us Our team provides educational support to chronically disengaged young people, Distance Education students, vocational pathway learners, and students who have been suspended, expelled, or marginalised from education. We work with a diverse cohort ranging from Kindergarten through to Year 12. Classes, session structures, and timetables are flexible and are adjusted according to the individual needs of students at any given time. Group classes generally operate from morning to midday and include up to six students. Individual sessions are shorter and aim to build each student’s capacity to progress into paired or small-group learning. Students typically engage in one of three pathways: - Distance Education (primary or secondary), facilitated by our team
- Digital TAFE / vocational pathways
- Individualised education programs developed by teachers to meet specific academic, social, and developmental needs
Teachers are expected to embed the principles and practices of our alternate North Education Model into all aspects of their teaching. Core Duties and Responsibilities of the Teacher - Build and maintain positive, safe, and trusting relationships with students, consistently going above and beyond to support their wellbeing and engagement.
- Teach and support young people who have experienced trauma, present with complex diagnoses, and/or face academic or social disadvantage.
- Deliver instruction in small class environments, including team-teaching and providing intensive one-on-one learning sessions.
- Implement a broad range of evidence-based teaching strategies that cater to diverse learning styles, cognitive abilities, and developmental needs.
- Manage a diverse caseload of students and provide ongoing educational support aligned with their individual goals.
- Develop and implement individualised learning programs that address a wide range of needs, including academic skill development, interest-based learning, life skills, and social skill building.
- Coordinate and facilitate learning through students’ Distance Education providers, including all communication, organisation, and monitoring of assigned schoolwork.
- Use initiative and creativity to design innovative approaches that re-engage young people who are significantly disengaged from education.
- Manage challenging behaviours and crisis situations effectively and therapeutically, in accordance with Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) practices.
- Work collaboratively with key stakeholders to develop Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) and lead or participate in IEP meetings.
- Conduct diagnostic assessments in literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional domains, using data to inform teaching plans and targeted interventions.
- Prepare high-quality written reports detailing students’ academic, social, and emotional progress.
- Complete weekly case notes documenting educational achievements, behavioural progress and attendance.
- Demonstrate exemplary time management, and strong oral and written communication skills in all aspects of the role.
Selection Criteria (Please address all points in your application) Qualifications - Minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree in Education (or equivalent teaching qualification).
Demonstrated experience supporting young people with complex and challenging behaviours. - Evidence of the ability to manage and respond to behaviour in a therapeutic, relationship-focused, and developmentally appropriate manner.
Ability to design and implement individualised learning programs. - Proven experience in assessing students’ academic needs and interests and using this information to create tailored programs that support engagement and learning progression.
Capacity to engage students through flexible, innovative, and responsive teaching practices - Demonstrated ability to adapt learning activities quickly, utilise creative strategies, and consistently go above and beyond to re-engage young people in education. Please provide an example that illustrates this capability.
Experience working with young people who have experienced trauma - Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed practice, including the ability to make reasonable adjustments to pedagogical approaches to ensure emotional safety, regulation, and meaningful participation in learning.
Proven ability to build positive, strengths-based relationships with young people - Strong interpersonal skills with evidence of establishing safe, supportive, and empowering connections that recognise and utilise students’ strengths. Please include a relevant scenario that highlights this skill.
